After a month or six weeks on the food, assess your puppy’s health. At 5:45 p.m., confine your puppy to his crate for another rest period until 8 p.m. Their bladder and digestive tract will be very small, so let them use the bathroom every one to two hours.
Smaller breeds switch at age 7 to 9 months while larger breeds stay on puppy food until 12 to 14 months. Measuring the exact amount of food to give your pup at this stage in their life is impractical. With a set feeding schedule, your puppy will learn when to expect food and will be less likely to beg between designated meal times.
Leaving out canned food, milk, or softened food isn’t ideal because bacteria or mold may grow in the food but leaving out dry food. Feeding your puppy moistened dry puppy food, 3 to 5 times per day for no longer than 10 minutes per feeding. Monitor their eating habits and adjust to them accordingly.
