Members of the breed today can all trace their heritage back to Susie a white cat with unusual folded ears who earned her keep as a mouser in a barn in Scotlands Tayside.

When Scottish Fold cats are bred with straight-eared breeds there is a fifty percent chance the litter will have folded ears. The Scottish Fold is a breed of domestic cat with a natural dominant-gene mutation that affects cartilage throughout the body causing the ears to fold bending forward and down towards the front of the head which gives the cat what is often described as an owl-like appearance. Cats with drooping ears or folded ears are ancient.
This unusual breed of cat is easily recognized by the distinct curling back of its ears to as far as a 90 degree angle. Such was the case with the Scottish Fold. The Chinese also contributed the second example of a folded ear cat to the cat fancy history when one was noted in 1938.

Nevertheless the creator of the Scottish breed is William Ross who in 1961 saw and bought from a farm owner in Scotland a fold kitten white kitten one of two kittens born to a Scottish cat with fold ears named Susie. Unlike in the folding ears the mutation in these cats causes the ears to curl backward.
